Martha’s Vineyard Illumination

The village of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is famous for the oldest working platform carousel in the world and the cluster of tiny cottages in the campground of the Martha’s Vineyard Meeting Association. What began as tents became tiny cottages in the 1860s, trimmed with ornate woodwork called gingerbread. The white appliqués are authentic designs including ones from our friends’ cottage.
“Grand Illumination Night” happens one night each summer in August. Three hundred cottages are decorated with paper lanterns and some are still lit with candles. It is a glorious sight!

Barcelona Crow's Nest

Two events in 2011 inspired this quilt. First, a class with Nancy Crow prompted the traditional free cut strings creating motion and movement. Then, a trip to Spain provided color inspiration based upon the mosaic ceiling in the Gaudi Park, comprised of sixty three hues of white. The Market in Barcelona sold only eggs, giving me a range of pale tints.

To Everything There is a Season

This quilt was all about the color of beautiful springtime hellebores. An inspirational fabric, a traditional pineapple block and an original border design combine with many fabrics to make my sewing room colorful even in the dead of winter. Thread painting, hand couching, satin stitch appliqué, machine embroidery and more than 125 dimensional flowers enhance the design. The unmarked, free motion quilting was done entirely on my home machine.

Size: 84" x 84"

Awards:

Blue Ribbon, Best Border Award, Vermont Quilt Festival, VT, 2010

Best Craftmanship, 2nd Place, The Gathering, Nashua, NH, 2010

My Dorothy Complex: I’m Crazy About Red Shoes

This quilt commemorates some of my favorite red shoes that I have worn over the years—even including a pair that I designed! I’ve always loved red shoes, so I designed these red boots for a shoe manufacturer in Massachusetts while I was studying art in college. Although they were selected for production, I regret that I never asked for a pair for myself.
